- THE PLANE OF HIPPOCRATES. On Kos, everything subtly smells of history. Hippocrates, the most famous physician of antiquity and the founder father of modern medicine, was born and taught here. On Kos, he wrote his famous oath, which every doctor takes to this day. In the very center of the capital of the island, the Kos town, a huge plane tree has been growing since ancient times. In its shadow, Hippocrates is said to have given lessons to his students.
- ASKELEPIEION. In about 4 km from the city center there are the ruins of Asklepieion, considered the world’s first hospital. Askelepieion was a kind of ancient medical center. You can see the ruins of hospital premises, the temple complex dedicated to the healer god Asklepius, the thermal baths.
- NERANTZIA CASTLE. Also, in the very center of the city, proudly stands the Castle of St. John, built by knights in the Middle Ages.
- ANCIENT AGORA. Located close to the port, the Ancient Agora (Ancient Market) will delight you with the ruins of once ample streets, sanctuaries, a stadium and a gymnasium.
- ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM. The museum is located in the heart of the city, in the old town. Its expositions exhibit various findings from the Ancient Agora, Askelepieion and other sites of the island.
- OTTOMAN MOSQUE. Located in the very center of the Kos Town, the mosque is a silent reminder of the four centuries of Ottoman possession.
- TEMPLE OF DIONYSUS. The ruins of the temple to the god of winemaking and theater are also located in the city center, not far from the waterfront and the Roman House (Casa Romana).
- ROMAN ODEON. The Odeon on Kos Island was built in the likeness of the Roman Colosseum in the 2nd century AD. It is perfectly preserved. In ancient times, thousands of spectators gathered here to watch the gladiator fights.
-
BASILICAS OF ST. STEPHEN. A complex of Paleo-Christian basilicas is dating back to the 5th-6th century BC. The ruins are located in the town of Kamari in the south of Kos. If you are planning to rent a car, be sure to drop by here. From the hill with basalicas there is a magnificent view of the tiny island of Kastri.
- OLD TOWN. The old town is located really close to the port of Kos. So you can easily find it after a pleasant 10-15 minute walk along the sea. Narrow, vivid and photogenic streets will be a great backdrop for a photo in memory of Greece. While numerous shops are a great place to buy obligatory Greek souvenirs – olive oil, soap and cosmetics.
-
CASA ROMANA (ROMAN HOUSE). The Roman House is an elegant maison of a wealthy and privileged citizen in ancient period. The House is distinctly reminiscent of the style of the houses in Pompeii. It has originally 36 rooms (!). Beautiful frescoes and atriums with fountains were actively used in the interior, according to the Roman fashion of the 2nd-3rd centuries AD.
- WINDMILL AND TRADITIONAL HOUSE IN ANTIMACHIA. For an authentic atmosphere and a flair of village life of the island you should go to Antimachia. The village is located in 20 km away from Kos Town. The unhurried pace of life, the unpretentious lifestyle of the early 20th century, soar in the air here.
- ZIA VILLAGE. Set high in the mountains, the village of Zia is famous for iconic views and a fine tavern. Be sure to visit if you have a rented vehicle.
- LAMBI BEACH AND PARALIA BEACH. These two wide lovely sandy beaches are within walking distance from the port of Kos. This means you can visit them before taking the ferry back to Bodrum. Excellent infrastructure, many beach clubs and cozy fish taverns will allow you to relax and enjoy Greek hospitality and the gentle Aegean Sea.
-
THERMAL SPRINGS. Hot springs are located in 12 km from the Kos Town, not far from the steep cape of St. Fokas. We definitely recommend visiting this attraction if you rent a car on the island. Here you will find a natural sea-pool with hot springs. The temperature of the healing springs is quite high, from 42 to 50 degrees C. Therefore, it is advisable to dive a little further from the springs, where the thermal water has already mixed with the cool sea water.
First of all, we want to draw your attention to the fact that the Kos Town is quite small place. Therefore, it is very easy to visit most of its sights, just walking slowly around the city! The main thing is to download a map of the island to your phone and read in advance a little about the interesting places of Kos.
But if your plan is really brief exploring the most interesting sights of Kos and lazy beach time after… Then a tourist mini-train on wheels might be an excellent option. There are 4 diffirent routes, they are marked with colours. The mini-train depatures from the harbour every half an hour from 10:00 to 14:00. And each circular route lasts about 20 minutes.
Renting a car (from €35) or a scooter (from €18) is also a great way to explore the island. Thus, you will be able to visit not only Kos Town, but also other parts of the island! In addition, almost the entire island of Kos is covered by a network of great bike paths. Therefore, you can explore the island with a breeze by renting a bicycle.
